NMDA
receptors are formed after the back part of the spinal cord (Dorsal Horn) is
bombarded with pain for an extended period of time. These are receptors that
use a very fast neurotransmitter and they cause a marked increase in the amount
of pain transmitted to the brain. They also prevent opioids from working to
their full effectiveness.
